Lava Paint by By Bjorn is a high-quality matte textured wall paint with a subtle mineral appearance. Applied in two coats, it creates a soft, cloudy effect that adds warmth, depth and character to any interior.
Its natural finish sits somewhere between traditional wall paint and plaster, but with more texture and character than standard paint. The result is a unique wall finish that changes subtly with the light and works beautifully in both modern and warm interiors.
Lava Paint is easy to apply yourself and can be used on walls and ceilings, as well as furniture, doors and cabinets. It is suitable for both new builds and existing interiors.
You don’t need to be a professional. With the right preparation and application technique, you can create the characteristic By Bjorn Lava Paint finish yourself.
Lava Paint is applied in two coats using a block brush. Work calmly and apply the paint crosswise to create the characteristic soft, cloudy Lava Paint effect.
1. Prepare the surface
Make sure the surface is flat, clean, dry and dust-free. Lightly sand the wall and remove any loose material or imperfections. On highly absorbent or newly plastered surfaces, apply By Bjorn Primer first.
2. Apply the first coat
Dilute the Lava Paint with 10% water and stir well. Apply the first coat with a By Bjorn block brush, working crosswise in horizontal and vertical movements. Spread the paint evenly and avoid applying it too thickly.
3. Apply the second coat
Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 2–6 hours. Apply the second coat using the same crosswise technique. This is what creates the characteristic cloudy texture and natural depth of Lava Paint.
4. Extra protection (optional)
For areas that need extra protection, such as a bathroom, you can finish the wall with By Bjorn Coating. Allow the Lava Paint to dry for 12 hours, lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper and apply the coating with a felt roller.

Coverage
Approximately 3.5 m² per kg for two coats when diluted with 10% water. Actual coverage may vary depending on the surface, absorption and application method.
Drying time
Lava Paint is dust-dry after approximately 2 hours and can be recoated after 2–6 hours. It is fully cured after approximately 48 hours.
Application temperature
Apply Lava Paint at a minimum temperature of 10°C. Avoid working in direct sunlight and make sure the room is well ventilated.
Maintenance
Once fully dry, the surface can be cleaned with a soft cloth. Avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaning products to protect the finish.
Storage & shelf life
Lava Paint has a minimum shelf life of 12 months in its original, unopened packaging. Store in a cool, dry and frost-free place.
Good to know
Lava Paint has a matte finish and can be diluted with water up to a maximum of 20%. For the best result, By Bjorn recommends 10% water. Clean your tools with water after use.
